Payel has been associated with the game of Kabaddi for almost six years now. A prolific raider, Payel made her mark in the Indian team for the first time in 2014 and was a part of the Indian team at the Beach Kabaddi Games that won the Gold medal. She then went on to win the Gold medal at the 2016 SAFF Games and then at the 2017 Asian Kabaddi Championship.

Her big breakthrough though came in the year 2018, when Payel was appointed as the captain of the Indian team that went to Jakarta for the 2018 Asian Games. While the Indian team failed to win a Gold medal, Payel's performance was talked about a lot. She was also the part of the women's team that won Gold at the 2019 South Asian Games in Nepal.

Payel is recruited at the Indian Railways and leads their women's Kabaddi team. She has been one of the top women’s players on the national circuit and also a multiple national championship winner. Recently, she successfully led the Railways team at the 67th Senior National Kabaddi Championships in March 2020. The Railways' women's team defeated Himachal Pradesh in the finals and went on to win the championship in Jaipur. Payel picked up 32 raid points, the third-highest from the Railways team.
