Uttar Pradesh Kabaddi League: A new chapter for Kabaddi in India's most populous state

India’s most populous state will be hosting the inaugural season of the Uttar Pradesh Kabaddi League (UPKL). Even more representative of the state’s history, Kashi, also known as Varanasi, will be represented by UPKL’s team “Kashi Kings”. The team wil channel the cultural and spiritual tradition of the region in the heart-stopping game of kabaddi.

Uttar Pradesh Kabaddi League: 8 teams to participate 

The first season of the UPKL will kick off on July 11th, 2024, at the Noida Indoor Stadium. Eight teams will vie for the championship title, including:

  • Yamuna Warriors
  • Noida Ninjas
  • Kashi Kings (Varanasi)
  • Awadh Ramdoot
  • Brij Stars
  • Sangam Challengers
  • Ayodhya Warriors
  • Ganga Kings of Mirzapur

Each team will comprise 15 players. The tournament will be featuring 120 kabaddi players from various regions of Uttar Pradesh. This diverse group of participants will make sure the high-octane and thrilling action throughout the tournament.

UPKL Mega Auction

To assemble these powerhouse teams, the UPKL will host a mega auction on June 10th at the Sarovar Hotel in Noida. Here, approximately 350-400 players will go under the hammer. Teams will compete to secure the most talented kabaddi athletes for their rosters. This auction is a major event for fans and players too, setting the stage for a competitive and action-packed season.

UPKL Trophy Tour

Beyond the exciting matches, the UPKL is taking steps to engage fans across the vast state of Uttar Pradesh. The prestigious UPKL trophy will embark on a "UPKL Trophy Tour 2024," visiting over 20 major cities in a span of 20-25 days. This initiative aims to bring the excitement of the league closer to kabaddi fans.

Kulvant Baliyan, the owner of the Kashi Kings, expressed his excitement for the league's potential. He stated, "The Kashi Kings are more than just a team; we are a representation of Varanasi's indomitable spirit." Baliyan further highlights the UPKL's potential to not only expand the kabaddi fanbase but also present the sport in a modern way that resonates with younger audiences. The Kashi Kings, along with all participating teams, aim to inspire and motivate people to embrace this ancient and thrilling sport.
